Bestselling Author Talks Love Loss And Literary Success

T L Swan opens up about her writing process, the emotional depth behind her steamy romances, and how personal hardship led her to rediscover her lifelong passion for storytelling.

T L Swan writes with a heart that’s weathered storms and still chooses passion, humor, and redemption on every page. Her novels pulse with emotional gravity, sensuous chemistry, and characters who leap off the page and demand your attention. At the core of her storytelling is a deep belief in second chances, hard-won love, and the dazzling messiness of human connection. There’s a raw honesty in her work that resonates — because it was born from lived experience, from loss, from rebuilding, and ultimately, from choosing to dream again.

With bestsellers like The Stopover, The Takeover, and Mr. Masters, Swan has become a force in contemporary romance, crafting stories that are both wildly steamy and grounded in emotional truth. Her heroines are as complex and real as the women who inspired them, and her heroes? Often the kind who make readers believe in slow-burn tension, heartache, and the swoon-worthy “touch-her-and-die” intensity.

What sets Swan apart is not just the passion she pours into every book, but the vulnerability she brings to her craft. She writes without filters, without pretense — and because of that, her work doesn’t just entertain, it lingers. Whether she’s writing about love lost and found, or about the quiet bravery of starting over, her stories are always deeply human.

With each new release, T L Swan invites readers into a world where love is messy, loyalty is fierce, and fairy tales come with plot twists. And if her stories have taught us anything, it’s that sometimes the most unforgettable journeys begin with nothing but a blank page and the courage to try.

T L Swan writes with unfiltered honesty, delivering unforgettable characters, emotional resonance, and a rare authenticity that elevates modern romance fiction.

What inspired you to create the fiercely independent and complex female leads in your books?
I guess I just base my female leads on the women in my life. Most women I know are funny, smart, complex, and super independent. I honestly don’t know any women who aren’t incredible.

How do you balance steamy romance with emotional depth in your storytelling?
It’s funny, for an author who writes a lot of steam, I’m super picky with what I like. For me it’s all about emotional depth and the steam is a bi product of that. I need to be connected to the characters to be able to enjoy their story. I need to feel that attraction between them to want to read about them having a private moment. I find that if I don’t relate with them or understand and like them… no matter what their relationship is I just don’t want to read steam between them. I also love the “touch her you die” jealousy vibe so I’m not into the reverse harem or anything like that. I mean in theory it sounds good…. But I never seem to finish the books. Maybe that makes me a weirdo, I don’t know.

Which of your male protagonists challenged you the most to write, and why?
Hmm, not going to lie, they are all hard…lol. Probably I find the shy quiet types of men the hardest to write. I think that’s probably because I have to dig really deep within myself to find their stories. The bossy asshole kind of guys just show up naturally for me and dominate the page. I guess it’s like the saying says, it’s the quiet ones you have to watch.

How has your background or personal experiences influenced your writing style or themes?
For anyone who knows my story, I didn’t start writing the normal way. Fifteen years ago, my husband and I made a bad business decision and lost everything. It was in amongst immense hardship that I found an old box of diaries filled with stories I had written as a teenager. It reminded me that before life had got in the way I had wanted to be an author. I literally went inside, downloaded a free trial of Microsoft Word, and wrote Chapter 1. No training, and nothing to lose. I just hoped to be able to pay for my credit card bill each month. I know now that it was never meant to happen when I was 17, I was meant to have lived life experience, I was meant to study psychology, and I was meant to have hardship to be able to fully enjoy this crazy life I live now. It was all in the grand plan of my life.

What does your typical writing day look like, and do you follow any specific routines?
I’m either all in, or all out. There is no balance for me at all and being like this is something that I’ve had to learn to accept. Some days there are absolutely no words in my head, and it can last weeks, even months. Then it will hit, and stories play like movies in my head, I can’t write fast enough and I will work fourteen hour days for weeks on end. I’ve learnt to ride the waves of inspiration when they come and be kind to myself when my brain needs to rest.

How do you approach writing dialogue to keep it both realistic and emotionally charged?
For me, the stories are happening in real time. The men come to me, and I don’t know, it’s hard to explain but the stories just appear. The women’s responses are my reaction to what the men do. I just sit at my computer and type; it’s like a download. I honestly feel I am gifted these incredible flawed stories from somewhere in the universe. No way I could come up with this stuff on my own… Hehe.

What was the most surprising fan reaction you’ve ever received?
Probably all the T L Swan and my book character tattoos I have seen over the years. Honestly pinch me moments.

What’s it like to see your books translated into multiple languages and loved worldwide?
Shocking. Incredible. Unbelievable. So very grateful for this life I get to live.

Can you tell us anything about upcoming projects or characters you’re excited about?
I have a new series coming out with my traditional publisher Arndell which I am very excited about. I have the third book in the Kingston Lane series with Montlake; Amazon’s romance publishing arm, coming, and I have another surprise book coming soon that I can’t name yet. A very exciting release season is coming up.

What advice would you give to aspiring romance authors hoping to stand out in the genre?
Be authentic, readers crave – as we all do, real people. For me, I find the more honest, genuine, and flawed I allow my books and myself to be, the more my beloved readers support me.
Also…. Strap yourself in, being an author is not for the faint of heart. The industry is harsh. People are mean, there are people who love to bully authors for a sport, and I think the sooner you realize that it says a lot more about them and their character than it does about you… the easier it is to accept and ignore. My favorite saying is…. “Don’t take criticism from someone you would never ask for advice.”
