Thomas Silvera is a visionary advocate and author whose heartfelt work saves lives, inspires change, and uplifts marginalized communities through powerful storytelling.

What inspired you to create the ImmuniForce universe and turn real-world challenges into superhero stories?
I created the ImmuniForce universe to transform pain into purpose. After losing my son Elijah to a preventable allergic reaction, I wanted to use storytelling to make complex health issues accessible and empowering, especially for kids. Superheroes speak to the imagination, and by giving food allergies, asthma, and other conditions a face and a fight, I’m helping children see their strength in the struggle.

How did your personal experiences shape the mission and vision of the Elijah-Alavi Foundation?
Elijah’s passing was the most devastating moment of my life, but it became a turning point. The Foundation was born out of a promise to make sure no other child would be failed the way Elijah was. My lived experience as a father, advocate, and someone living with allergies and asthma myself shapes every initiative we lead, whether it’s education, policy, or support.

What was the most challenging part of passing Elijah’s Law in multiple states?
The biggest challenge has been navigating different political climates and convincing stakeholders that this is not just a health issue but a child safety imperative. Each state has its own system, pace, and politics, and keeping momentum while reliving Elijah’s story over and over can be emotionally exhausting but necessary.

Can you share a moment when you realized your advocacy was making a real difference?
I will never forget when a mother approached me after a talk in New York and said, “Because of you and your story, my childcare provider was able to save my child’s life.” Moments like that are unforgettable. We later learned that Elijah’s Law has already helped save at least three lives and likely more. It was a powerful reminder that this work is more than just legislation. It is a life saving action, protecting one child, one adult, one story at a time.

How do you balance your roles as a researcher, advocate, actor, and author?
It’s a daily juggle, but it’s all connected. The research informs the advocacy. The advocacy fuels the storytelling. The storytelling, whether through writing or acting, gives me a creative outlet to heal, educate, and inspire. Each role strengthens the other. I’ve learned to manage my time with intention and lean on my incredible support system to keep it all moving forward.

What audience reactions to ImmuniForce have meant the most to you?
It’s the kids who leave the biggest impact. When a child with food allergies says, “I finally see a hero like me,” it hits home in the deepest way. One parent told me their child now carries their EpiPen with confidence after reading The Anaphylaxis Strike. Another shared that their child wanted to jump into the comic to help fight off Anaphylaxis. That’s the kind of ripple effect that shows the power of representation, education, and imagination combined.

How has your work with government agencies and pharmaceutical companies influenced your storytelling?
It’s given me a deeper understanding of the systemic gaps that exist and how storytelling can fill them. Partnering with these entities allows me to infuse real science, policy, and cultural insight into my stories, making them both credible and impactful.

What role do you think creative media like comics and graphic novels play in public health education?
A huge one. Comics speak a universal language. They simplify, humanize, and destigmatize complex issues. When used effectively, they can educate, spark conversations, and even influence policy. ImmuniForce isn’t just entertainment, it’s education in disguise.

What new projects or expansions can readers expect next in the ImmuniForce universe?
We’re currently developing ImmuniForce: Shadow of Phasor, which dives deeper into the emotional and medical complexities of allergic reactions. We’re also working on an audio version voiced by kids from the food allergy community and expanding our reach with a school-based curriculum and a coloring book series.

What advice would you give to other authors who want to use storytelling as a tool for social change?
Write from the heart but back it with purpose. Know your “why,” do the research, and be fearless in your message. Stories can open minds, educate and save lives, but only if they’re rooted in truth and told with authenticity.
