What inspired you to create the characters of Charm and Dawn as “Soul Sistas”?

I always believe that people are more similar than different. I wanted to highlight the power of unity and love. An old friend was my soul brother – we looked different, but we are still soul brothers.

How has your own family life influenced the themes in your books?

My family is very multicultural and we are still close. Its ok to be different and still connect.

What message did you hope young readers take away from The Soul Sistas Go To School!?

Its ok to look different and be unique. It’s ok to connect with people of different backgrounds and be true to who you are.

How did it feel to see your book adapted into a play at a local theatre?

It has already been a play in a local theatre. It’s a funny idea with content and feeling – what is really needed today (love).

Why was it important for you to explore racial and cultural diversity in a children’s book?

It’s important for all children to see the faces of themselves represented in stories – especially in a positive way (mentorship).

Can you share more about the creative collaboration between you and illustrator Monique Ra Brent?

She cares about the theme of the book – her art brings the book to life – I would never do a book like this without her input.

What challenges did you face in writing your first children’s book, and how did you overcome them?

My own feeling of imposter syndrome – not sure if i was an author. But the more i wrote about the Sistas, the more I became confident in the message.

What was your reaction to winning the Literary Titan Award and the City of Pickering Cultural Diversity Award?

Truly elated and inspired to continue writing and speaking about the Soul Sista’s and also inspired to write other books (i.e. poetry, book about manifestation of your goals). I also would like to write about promoting books (my advantage – since this is my career to promote and engage).

Are there more books planned in the Soul Sistas series, and if so, what can readers look forward to?

I would like to write one or two more – as they age and become more adult – explore the dynamics as they age.

“Be brave!”Newton Vanriel

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write meaningful stories for children?Never give up. But, plan what you are going to do (i.e. write out a plan) and get advice from your publisher. Believe in your art and don’t listen to every opinion. Be brave!
